About Seattle

The largest city in the Pacific Northwest, Seattle is an outdoor paradise. A distinctive feature of downtown Seattle is the Space Needle, which was built for the 1962 World's Fair. Standing over 600 feet high, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view from the top floor restaurant, including Mount Rainier and all of Puget Sound. An elevated monorail built for the fair runs from the Space Needle to the Westlake Center station.

There are many hilly streets in downtown Seattle, leading down to the waterfront. The Pike Place Market is a historic Seattle landmark, the oldest farmer's market in the United States and a local weekend favorite. At King County Airport is The Museum of Flight, featuring one of the largest aerospace displays in the world.

Washington State Ferries operates large vessels that carry cars and people on daily crossings of Puget Sound. The ferries connect the residential islands of Whidby and Vashon with downtown Seattle. Sightseeing cruises go to islands farther out, such as Orcas Island. Near Seattle is the vast Olympic National Park, which extends to the rocky cliffs on the Pacific shore. Another interesting tour is to the historic Norwegian town of Poulsbo, situated on the Kitsap Peninsula.
